Michael Underwood and Angellica Bell enjoy Gallic flair in the heart of Teddington with butternut squash risotto, seared scallops and haggis tempura!
You’ve probably guessed we like eating out locally and know that we get very excited when we find little gems dotted around a 5–10 mile radius! Well last week we treated our taste buds to a culinary delight at a place called Retro Bistrot in Teddington. We hold our hands up, when we looked it up on the internet it was the first time we had heard of this restaurant, even though it has a prime location on the High Street and we have good friends
that live 150 yards up the road from the establishment.
The first thing you notice when you walk in is the design of the place. It has a classy feel, with chandeliers hanging, velvet curtains draping and smooth jazz music playing. All of which, makes you feel you’re booked into an eatery in an arrondissement of Paris. The menu is uncomplicated (in a good way) with a varied and not overwhelming selection of dishes. We had a starter of butternut squash risotto and the seared scallops with leeks and haggis tempura. The risotto was full of flavour, beautifully presented and incredibly moreish. The scallops were huge and perfectly cooked.
I was unsure about the haggis tempura when we ordered it, but it was a delight. Our mains were a medium rare chateaubriand for one (unusual as most restaurants only do it for two) and rainbow trout with an almond crust. Once again, we couldn’t fault the food; perfectly cooked, well presented and full of taste. We managed to squeeze in a couple of desserts – the apple fritter and the banana crumble. They looked impressive when they arrived, but we
weren’t expecting them to arrive ‘deconstructed’. We couldn’t fault the look or taste, but would have liked them to be a little more substantial. That’s probably just because we’re a little greedy! Finally, we have to mention the owner and maître d, Vincent. He is a fantastic character and adds a certain je ne sais quoi to proceedings. Friendly, flirty, fun and French! As you’d expect, he’s passionate about the quality food he serves and understandably proud of his fantastic family-run restaurant.
