Café Culture

Sisley White finds that healthy food is not only good for you, but can taste great too at the Lu-Ma Supper Club in Wimbledon

In a side street away from the hustle and bustle of central Wimbledon is the independent, healthy-eating café Lu-Ma. Run by mother and daughter team Lucy (Lu) and Maria (Ma), the café has an emphasis on eating well and that is reflected in the food they serve. The nutritionally-rich dishes they create include an abundance of vegetarian and vegan options and they take care to make sure they do not use refined sugar, dairy or red meat.

The recent expansion of the café has provided a huge new space and the opportunity to try new things – the café’s new supper club is the latest of the team’s successful plans.

We arrived at Lu-Ma on a beautiful spring evening and were greeted with a glass of fruit punch. Sitting in the garden at sunset there was a beautiful range of canapés brought around while live music was playing. The canapés consisted of courgette rolls filled with a mix of vegetables and avocado, salad cups served in a lettuce leaf and mini pizzas, all of which were gluten free and vegan.

We were led inside where the café had been beautifully decorated with seasonal flowers. We found our seats and the first course arrived quickly. The cream of asparagus soup with crispy asparagus had a clean green and healthy taste, which felt fresh and soul soothing.

For our main course we enjoyed vegetable skewers with lime and ginger glaze served with quinoa, detox salad and edible flowers. The mix of tastes, textures and flavours in one dish, all from simple ingredients, made it a delight to eat.

As I have a sweet tooth I was most excited about trying the dessert. The strawberry tartlet was stunning. The pastry was crisp with a crumbly and soft texture and the strawberries were fresh and full of flavour. It was a beautiful way to end the experience of my first supper club.

The organic prosecco flowed freely and the energy and atmosphere in the room was warm and welcoming from the staff and diners. It was lovely to look around a packed room with people chatting and laughing while enjoying delicious healthy and nutritional dishes. This meal showed that gluten free and vegan meals can be full of flavour and a joy to eat. It was a special experience and one I would definitely recommend.
