Food & Flavour editor Sophie Kalinauckas enjoys a delicious day out at The Butcher & Grill in Battersea on sunny saturday afternoon
A sunny Saturday afternoon and I had just taken a stroll through the activity-packed and beautiful Battersea Park. With all the walking my appetite was worked up! I turned back into the noisy streets in search of nutritional supplies and soon found an appetising refuge at The Butcher & Grill. With its quirky, urban setting, this foodie destination had my stomach rumbling as I walked through the huge butchers and deli counter upon entrance, displayed with an assortment of hanging meats, sea food and other intriguing marvels. I met with friends and we parked our tired feet at a table outside overlooking a tiny tributary of the River Thames ready for a feast!
To start, my friends and I shared the marinated feta, Israeli couscous, roast peach, red chard, pomegranate and pine nuts – the dish was a summer holiday of different flavours come together. My Greek blood knows good feta when it tastes it and this feta was true to its Hellenic homeland. Mixed with the roast peach and pomegranate, it was an interesting and delicious mix of Mediterranean tastes. I polished off the starter with a cucumber seltzer – muddled cucumber, elderflower, fresh mint leaves, apple juice and sparkling mineral water, this was a natural healthy potion of fruity aromas. At this point I was enjoying each moment and every mouthful, it was relaxing and delicious.
It was time for mains and we each went our separate ways. I opted for the tomato and mozzarella gnocchi, caponata, crispy basil and parmesan, my carnivore friend was tempted by the roast chicken supreme, pomme Anna, wilted spinach and grilled king oyster mushrooms, while my indecisive buddy went for the heritage tomato salad, set basil custard, nettle pesto, walnuts with sides of triple cooked chips and purple sprouting broccoli. We gossiped, laughed and contemplated life and the universe as we dined into dusk and enjoyed our fabulous feast of flavours bite by bite. The staff were attentive and helpful and we didn’t feel guilty at all for ordering a couple more drinks and a chocolate fondant with pistachio ice cream before we dared to take the bus ride back to reality.
