Making it Memorable

Does Wimbledon restaurant Oki produce unforgettable sushi? Steph Siegle finds out

Tucked away on Wimbledon Broadway is a Japanese sushi and noodle restaurant that aims to provide customers with ‘sushi and noodles you will remember’. As my sushi consumption is mainly derived from that sold in supermarkets or high-street chains, which don’t particularly linger in my memory, I was keen to see if the restaurant could uphold this promise.

Oki, which has been on Wimbledon town centre’s restaurant scene for five years, with a sister branch in South Wimbledon for more than ten years, offers both sit-in dining (for up to 80 covers) as well as takeaway options. The décor is clean and simple – think communal-style tables and benches – and is designed to be very much how food is served in Japan, particularly at lunchtime.

Owner Kim tells me that all the chefs are Japanese or are trained in Japanese cuisine and that all dishes are prepared fresh on site. Plates of sushi are appealingly displayed on the counter and, although I was tempted by the intriguingly-named Dynamite Maki, I opted instead for Kim’s recommendation – and one of the most popular customer choices – the salmon teriyaki bento box.

It’s a good job I was hungry… the portions are substantial, tasty, and yet remain reasonably priced. The bento box was beautifully presented, with prawn and vegetable tempura in a light batter, four pieces of salmon and avocado sushi, teriyaki salmon on a bed of stir-fried bamboo shoots, three pieces of salmon sashimi, miso soup and a crunchy salad with a pleasant fruity jam-like dressing. The fish tasted beautifully fresh, with the good-quality salmon tender with a mild, subtle taste (pepped up by the accompanying wasabi, of course).

There is an abundance of choice on Oki’s menu – maki sushi, nigiri sushi, sashimi, Bibimbap (a traditional Korean dish), bento boxes, noodle soup, rice dishes, tempura, teriyaki, udon noodles; it’s a delicious way to start a new year with healthy eating options that doesn’t leave you feeling hungry.

And remember, if it’s too cold outside to head out to the restaurant itself, you can order online and collect loyalty points as you do so. I’ll be reaching for my phone to put in my order soon – definitely one to remember.
